How the SBA Loan Calculator Works

The calculator subtracts the down payment from the business purchase price to estimate the financed amount. It then applies a standard fully amortizing loan formula using the interest rate and loan term you enter. The estimated monthly payment includes principal and interest only.

  • Purchase price: The proposed price paid for the business.
  • Down payment: The buyer’s cash contribution expressed as a percentage of the purchase price.
  • Loan amount: Purchase price minus the estimated down payment.
  • Interest rate: The annual rate used for this planning estimate.
  • Loan term: The number of years used to amortize the loan.

Example Calculation

Assume a business purchase price of $1,000,000, a 10% down payment, a 10% annual interest rate, and a 10-year loan term. The estimated loan amount is $900,000. Using those assumptions, the estimated monthly principal and interest payment is approximately $11,894, with annual debt service of approximately $142,723.

How to Interpret the Results

Monthly payment shows the recurring principal and interest obligation. Annual debt service is useful when comparing the proposed loan with the business’s expected annual cash flow. Total interest illustrates the financing cost over the full term if the loan remains in place and payments follow the assumed schedule.

A payment estimate is only one part of acquisition analysis. Buyers should also consider working capital, closing costs, lender fees, required reserves, existing debt, equipment needs, and post-closing operating expenses.

Practical SBA Financing Considerations

  • SBA loan rates may be fixed or variable and can change before or after closing.
  • The required equity injection depends on the transaction, lender, borrower, and current program requirements.
  • Loan proceeds may include eligible working capital or transaction expenses, so the final loan amount may differ from purchase price minus down payment.
  • Lenders review borrower experience, credit, collateral, cash flow, and the structure of the acquisition.
  • Seller financing and standby terms may affect how a lender evaluates a transaction.
